Shiite communities in Pakistan, where a growing number of people in Shia religious communities are targeted for murder, have protested in Pakistan against an Islamic State (IS) group on at least five occasions since 2009. The last bombing was in Peshawar in June 2014.
Since then, more than 50 people have been killed in three separate IS attacks, which have been linked to the group’s violent interpretation of Islam.
In early November, four people were killed and at least 140 wounded by a suicide bomb which killed at least seven people and injured more than 20 others in a packed school in Peshawar.
The militant group has claimed the July 28 attack, saying it was “vengeance” for the killing of nine members of the Shia Hazara minority by the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
